WILLEMSTAD – Independent Member of Parliament, Omayra Leeflang wants action from the Minister of Health, Environment and Nature, Dr. Ben Whiteman against the asbestos remains on the grounds of the oil refinery.

The MP reacted after statements made by MP Jaime Cordoba during the weekly party meeting.

According to Cordoba, there are old asbestos pipes on the oil refinery terrain. Leeflang finds this unacceptable.

She wonders how it is possible that the ministry with a budget of 341,262,600 guilders does nothing against it. “Whiteman announced in 2013 with much fanfare that the Inspectorate of Health would be extended with an inspection department in the field of nature and environment. Before the creation of this new inspection department, the minister would get help from the Netherlands. In March 2014 Whiteman announced that he will seek for an inspector for the new service. It is now 2015. Two years later, however, he has still not taken concrete steps,” said the MP.

Leeflang finds it unacceptable that the asbestos pipes have been on the oil refinery grounds for years. She also wants Whiteman to take immediate action.
