WILLEMSTAD – Authorities in Aruba have taken measures, which they called “indirect visa” to keep the unwanted Venezuelans out. The Aruban government has identified 4 categories of Venezuelan tourists. Number one is the prudent tourist that visits the island for 5 to 7 days and have enough cash to cover their expenses. Secondly, there are those who are transit and only spend one night on the island to continue with their travel. There are those who are called ATM tourists. These are the Venezuelans who use their credit cards to get dollars and take these back to their country.

And finally there are those who stay illegally on the island. This group is growing and this is the reason why the authorities in Aruba are taking measures.

The Venezuelan tourist must have 500 dollars in cash to cover two days of stay on the island. If their stay is three days, they have to have 700 dollars in cash on arrival. In case the tourist does not have this kind of cash, he or she will be put on a flight back to Venezuela.

Sources in the Ministry of Justice are indicating that Curaçao is also contemplating such measures to keep unwanted Venezuelans out.

Recently there was a case in which five Venezuelans were arrested. They are suspected of committed various armed robberies on the island. There is also the case of the Venezuelan who tried to steal jewelry from a store at the Renaissance Hotel.

There are also confirmed cases of various Venezuelan women working in illegal prostitution on the island.

These are just a few examples of cases that are making the Curaçao authorities contemplate measures against the Venezuelans.
