WILLEMSTAD – When passengers arrive at the Curaçao International Airport, it will take them about half a minute to go through immigration and have their passport checked.
That is they use one of the six new e-gates in the arrival hall. They have to be 18 years and older and have a U.S., Canadian or European passport.
If they come as a tourist, then the passengers need an ED card filled out digitally via www.curacao.com.
In addition to the e-gates six, manned counters remain open for passengers who do not have the required passport or the age to use the e-gates.
At the departure hall, after customs there are three e-gates ready to help passengers depart from the island “digitally”.
This morning during the official inauguration of the e-gates, the various stakeholders that worked on this project expressed their satisfaction about how well the teams worked together. Curaçao Airport Holding (CAH), which is the owner of the airport, acquired these machines in their effort to give better service to arriving and departing passengers.
CAH has long been engaged in planning ways to improve the immigration process. Former director Maurice Adriaens indicated this last year. The principle to handle arriving passengers within a half hour, was then introduced.
The project involved the following parties: CAH, Curaçao Airport Partners (CAP), which is the operator of the airport, the baggage handlers, immigration, police and customs. The process was coordinated by KPMG Dutch Caribbean.
In a conversation with CAP representatives they indicated that on their part they had to invest in the infrastructure for the machines. CAP remodeled the entire arrival hall, which is now about 70% bigger than what it was. CAP has invested about half million guilders in this renovation.
There are signs indicating how these machines work. This automatic gate will scan the chip of the passport. The age is saved and the barcode is checked. It will then open the door. In the box a photo will be taken, which should correspond to the photo in the passport. Then another door will open and the passenger can go through. There will be assistance for the passengers if this is necessary.
