ORANJESTAD, WILLEMSTAD – “The ferry service between Aruba, Bonaire and Curaçao is even closer than we think,” said Andin Bikker, leader of the Aruban political party Partido Democracia Real. Bikker explained the steps that are being taken at the moment to start this ferry service.

On the agenda of the tripartite conference between the parliaments of Aruba, Sint Maarten and Curaçao, Bikker, who is in charge of economic development, highlighted this topic. The representatives reached various agreements during the meetings. Currently they are even further with the implementation of this project. The dossier was has been approved in Aruba and this island is practically ready to implement. Now the other islands have to follow the same procedure to approve the agreements. Each island signed an MoU about two years ago.

The committee has been working on this project for five years now. Based on the initiative, the committee immediately started working with all stakeholders to expedite the project.

The ferry can carry up to 1000 passengers, 450 trucks and 121 cars. It sails about 70 km per hour between the islands. It will take about two hours and fifteen minutes between Aruba and Curaçao. It will be a twice a day service, according to the politician.

The most important objective of this project is to increase the economy of the islands. Bikker indicated that the opportunities are countless. “Cargo will become cheaper and the markets will be bigger. People can also offer service on each of these three islands.”

“This system has proven to be a success. Look at the Canary Islands. The economy of these islands has grown fivefold when the fast ferry service was introduced. The distance between the islands is the same as the ABC islands,” said the Aruban politician.
