WILLEMSTAD – Leaders of the General Union for the Curaçao Employees (SGTK) have met with the oil refinery management to discuss the discontent among the contractors and their employees working in Isla and COT (Curaçao Oil Terminal at Bullenbaai).
The discontent is about a lump sum, which was agreed upon between the parties last year.
President of the SGTK Alcides Cova informed that they were invited by the oil refinery management to meet about this issue. During this meeting, the union leaders’ first question was about the current financial situation of the oil refinery. This question is very important since it is common knowledge that the Venezuelan State Oil Company PDVSA, which runs the oil refinery on the island, is going through some tough times.
The answer the union leaders received was that the general situation of the oil industry is difficult, which also reflects in Curaçao, but this does not mean that the company will cut operational costs or the security of its personnel.
In this context, the oil refinery management promised that this month they will pay the lump sum to the contractors. The contractors will then have to pay their employees immediately, Cova informed.
