WILLEMSTAD – Another topic that was discussed at the Kingdom Inter-Parliamentary Conference is the improvement of sea and air links between the islands of the former Netherlands Antilles.

From the Dutch delegation, there were questions about the need to improve the air link between the BES islands of Saba and St. Eustatius in St. Maarten, while from Curaçao has emphasized the importance of a ferry service between the ABC (Aruba, Bonaire and Curaçao) islands.

This would boost the economic development of all three islands, suggested coalition MP, Alex Rosaria.

Last year the Dutch Labor Party indicated that they believe that the Netherlands should help in setting up the ferry service between the three ABC islands. Member of Parliament Roelof van Laar has asked the Minister of Kingdom Affairs, Ronald Plasterk if this is possible.

Plasterk said then that this is a private initiative, which should be picked up by the islands themselves.

Van Laar says that the government of the Netherlands should help with this kind of private connections and sees no reason why the government should not help through Bonaire.
