WILLEMSTAD – Prison guards at the Curaçao Correctional Facility (SDKK) are worried about their safety. Yesterday they called a meeting with the prison management to talk about their safety.
The prison guards work in block 4 and last Tuesday they witnessed a case of abuse against the prisoner Nepomuceno, who was convicted for the assault against a popular jewelry store on the island. The prisoner was thrown from the second floor.
The union representing the prison guards indicated that it was not really an action, but more of a meeting that lasted half hour with the interim director. During this meeting the guards wanted an explanation on certain policies and also their safety. After the meeting the guards resumed their work.
During the incident with the prisoners there were four guards in the block. According to the union, the guards had trauma and were not able to go to work.
Union leader Kenneth Bremer said that certain precautions have been taken, but they can never guarantee 100% safety, because of the surprise factor.
