CC | Update: Maduro orders closure for 72 hours of the border with Aruba, Curaçao and Bonaire

HomeLandenArubaCC | Update: Maduro orders closure for 72 hours of the border...
“I demand that the governments of Aruba, Curaçao and Bonaire take the measures that the Venezuelan government has demanded to stop the smuggling of our products and minerals,” said Maduro.

CARACAS, WILLEMSTAD – Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro announced the 72-hour closure of the border with the islands of Aruba, Curaçao and Bonaire through the activation of the “Sentinel Plan for Sovereignty and Contraband.”

The president informed that the National Armed Forces are instructed to take all the ports and airports where commercial routes with the islands of Aruba, Curaçao and Bonaire take place and develop, in order to put an end to the extraction of Venezuelan products and minerals to cross the border.

He added that his government has tried to hold talks with the governments of these three islands, which have not responded. This is the reason for the measure of the closing for 72 hours of the commercial routes.

“I demand that the governments of Aruba, Curaçao and Bonaire take the measures that the Venezuelan government has demanded to stop the smuggling of our products and minerals,” said Maduro.

The Venezuelan president guaranteed tourists and travelers the “free” transit to and from Aruba, Curaçao and Bonaire during these 72 hours of the border closure.

  1. @Observator,
Autocratische regime? Is that all?

  3. Mr Maduro is a big moron blaming everyone and everything for the crisis in his country. He and his corrupt administration is the root cause of the crisis in Venezuela. Soon his people will send him to a bus station or prison, where he belongs.

  4. @C.I.
You close the border to prevent things from getting in (Trump Build a Wall promise). So what is Maduro trying to prevent from coming in? If ‘everything’ is being smuggled out of Venezuela and sold, with what is it paid? Barter, dollars, arms? Remember the Tom Cruise movie ‘American Made’, which was based on a true story of drug running and arms smuggling? It’s backdrop is the era of the War on Drugs and the Iran-Contra affair, which gave birth of the Medellin cartel? This action by Maduro seems also like a crackdown on preventing unwanted things (and maybe persons) from getting IN. Recently the media reported the interception of boats (go-fast), weapons, money etc. What was their purose? Where did it come from? How much is not intercepted?

  5. Not so long ago when refugees from Syria and other Middle Eastern countries where invading the European countries many of them decided to close their border temporarily, other up to day are still closed they have build high fences and installed permanent border controls. So the measure of a country as Venezuela for closing is borders partially for only 3 days is nothing compared. Every country will take measure to protect its civilians especially that could affect them economically. Surely it is not nice to hear that the measure taken especially considering the small scale of the islands as Curaçao, Bonaire and Aruba in comparison to Venezuela. However nothing new, so far I am aware Curaçao is not depending solely on Venezuela for its provisions and the smugglers will probably look into other routes to keep on going with their business anyway.
