Caracas, Dec 28 (EFE).- Venezuela will end 2016 with a homicide rate of 91.8 for every 100,000 people, second only to El Salvador, the independent human rights group, Venezuelan Violence Observatory (OVV), said Wednesday.
The projected total number of violent deaths is 28,479, compared with 27,875 in 2015, OVV director Roberto Briceño Leon said.
Though the year-on-year increase is relatively small, the trend remains “alarming,” the sociologist told EFE.
El Salvador, with 103 homicides per 100,000 residents, is the world’s most dangerous country, Briceño Leon said, while Honduras trails Venezuela with a rate of 59 murders per 100,000.
Killings by the security forces account for 5,281 of this year’s violent deaths in Venezuela, according to the OVV figures.
Caracas has 138 homicides for every 100,000 inhabitants, making it the world’s most deadly capital city, Briceño Leon said.
An average of two law enforcement/private security personnel are killed every week in Venezuela, where another one-to-three people a week die at the hands of vigilantes, the OVV said.
In fewer than 10 percent of all homicides is anyone convicted, the group said.
