DUTCH CARIBBEAN LEGAL PORTAL
DUTCH CARIBBEAN LEGAL PORTAL

Due to an increased interaction between Suriname and the Dutch Caribbean, especially in the field of commerce and trade, Dutch Caribbean Legal Portal has decided to expand the reporting of this website to Suriname. Until now, Dutch Caribbean Legal Portal mainly reported on the islands within the Dutch Caribbean (Curacao, Aruba, Bonaire, St. Maarten, Saba and Statia).

There are striking similarities between Suriname and the Dutch Caribbean. Both are former colonies of the Netherlands. The legal systems in these jurisdictions are based on Dutch law, while in all these countries Dutch is an official language. Furthermore, the geographic distance between the Dutch Caribbean and Suriname is relatively short, which certainly contributes to the intensity of trading operations. A striking development is that, in the past few years, more and more Dutch Caribbean companies have started doing business with Suriname companies and vice versa. Furthermore, in the legal sector, many Dutch Caribbean law firms have started a Suriname Desk – whether or not staffed by Surinam lawyers – in the past years, from which they serve the Surinam market.

For Dutch Caribbean Legal Portal, the above is reason enough to include Suriname as a new and important focus area.

Dutch Caribbean Legal Portal is expanding its reporting to the Surinam jurisdiction. So far, this website only published news and information about the six island in the Dutch Caribbean. The expansion to Surinam news is launched with the publication of the Top 10 of the largest law firms in Suriname for the year 2014. This Top 10 will be launched annually from now on, as is the case with the Top 10’s for the Dutch Caribbean jurisdictions.
