The central themes of this IPKO will be mutual cooperation, recent developments in Venezuela, the law proposal to establish a Dispute Regulation for the Kingdom and structural observing of elections.

THE HAGUE–Twelve members of the First and Second Chambers of the Dutch Parliament will be travelling to St. Maarten to attend the Inter-Parliamentary Consultation of the Kingdom IPKO which takes place there January 8-11, 2019.

The central themes of this IPKO will be mutual cooperation, recent developments in Venezuela, the law proposal to establish a Dispute Regulation for the Kingdom and structural observing of elections. The delegations will also pay a visit to the dump.

The Parliaments of the Netherlands, Aruba, Curaçao and St. Maarten, under the chairmanship of St. Maarten Parliament Chairperson Sarah Wescot-Williams, will discuss important themes that concern all countries of the Kingdom during the IPKO, a consultation structure of the Parliaments of the Kingdom that takes place twice per year.

The opening of the IPKO takes place on Tuesday, January 8, followed by discussions about the political and social situation in Venezuela and the consequences for the Dutch Caribbean, mainly Curaçao and Aruba.

Mutual cooperation will be the central theme on Wednesday, January 9. The delegations will talk about the Kingdom Charter in small groups and, in a larger, plenary setting, they will discuss the Kingdom Law on Dispute Regulation (“Rijkswet Geschillenregeling”). On that day, the parliamentarians will also visit St. Maarten’s dump.

The paper on mutual election observing will be on the agenda on Thursday, January 10. The last day, Friday, January 11, is traditionally closed off with the signing of the agreement list, followed by a press conference.

Prior to the IPKO in St. Maarten, the Dutch parliamentary delegation will visit St. Eustatius on January 7 to get an update on the latest developments. After the IPKO, the Dutch delegation will pay a working visit to Saba on Saturday, January 12.

The delegation will be headed by Jan Paternotte, who is Chairman of the Second Chamber’s Permanent Committee for Kingdom Relations. Chairman of the First Chamber’s Committee for Kingdom Relations Ruard Ganzevoort will be the deputy delegation leader.

The other members of the Dutch delegation are Senators Helmi Huijbregts-Schiedon (VVD), Sophie van Bijsterveld (CDA) and Peter van Dijk (PVV), and Members of the Second Chamber André Bosman (VVD), Machiel de Graaf (PVV), Chris van Dam (CDA), Antje Diertens (D66), Nevin Özütok (GroenLinks), Ronald van Raak (SP) and Attje Kuiken (PvdA)
