PHILIPSBURG–Governor Eugene Holiday is not in danger of losing his post over his handling of the dismissal motion from Parliament handed down against now former Prime Minister William Marlin two weeks ago.

The Governor’s position is “not at stake” and his commitment to St. Maarten is “fully” trusted, said Dutch State Secretary for Kingdom Relations Raymond Knops in a press conference held in Holland House Beach Hotel on Monday.

“I, on behalf of the Dutch Government, expressed my gratitude for his efforts to act in this crisis, because it was a political crisis,” he said.

However, Knops pointed out, “We both agreed that the process over the last two weeks wasn’t a process which should be an example for the future. … I think we all should learn from what happened in the last two weeks. … Every politician, both in the Netherlands and in St. Maarten, should acknowledge the fact that he or she is there for the people, not for his own interest.”

The Governor’s non-action on the motion triggered the Kingdom Council of Ministers to issue an instruction to him to complete the procedure. This was not necessary in the end, as Marlin submitted his own dismissal decree and immediately demitted office on November 24.
