PHILIPSBURG–“We continue our commitment to serving the community and keeping the population safe,” said Police spokesman Chief Inspector Ricardo Henson from a dark police station, serving as headquarters for hundreds of law enforcement officers assisting the police force of St. Maarten on Wednesday.
The building suffered major damage thanks to monster hurricane Irma two weeks ago. The police forces from Aruba and Curacao, the Netherlands, Royal Marechaussee, Customs department, V.K.S and the Dutch Marines are working together in helping country St. Maarten get back on track.
“We are doing our best to operate from the building and hope to get the repairs done to the building as soon as possible as a number of offices were damaged during the passing of the hurricane. We would like to get the cooperation of the community by them listening to the commands of law enforcement officers,” Henson told the Daily Herald.
These agencies are assisting in various assigned tasks including combating the violation of the curfew, dealing with looters and mainly providing safety and security to the entire community. A “Zero Tolerance” policy is in place.
“I would like to give a special thanks to our local officers who are working long hours and have their personal homes and families to look after also. We do recognize your hard work and St. Maarten, especially Chief Carl John salutes you,” said the police spokesman.
No word yet on when the damaged building will be repaired. The building also serves as a holding block for prisoners of Pointe Blanche.
