The Governments of Spain and Curaçao signed a framework agreement for technical cooperation to strengthen the fight against illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing.

The agreement was signed at the headquarters of the General Secretariat of Fisheries under the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment (MAGRAMA) by the head, Andrés Hermida, and the Fishery Affairs Minister of Curaçao.

Under this agreement, the two sides will exchange important data to combat IUU fishing, such as “essential tools” to control and inspect fishing activities.

In addition, the agreement provides for a programme of theoretical and practical training for fisheries inspectors.

According to the Spanish Government, Spain is one of the leading countries in the world in the fight against illegal fishing. Proof of this is the recent Operation Sparrow, an initiative that reflects the importance the international cooperation with other countries has.

The agreement signed with Curaçao joins other actions taken by Spain in recent years to combat illegal catches. Among them, MAGRAMA highlights transparency and cooperative surveillance protocols; the implementation of the verification procedure of private licenses obtained by the Spanish fleet in third countries; support for the global register of vessels of FAO; and the TRIP project, which identifies risks to the fish processing industry.
