Who am I and what do I want? Ask another

Who am I? What do I want? What are my goals for 2014? On the borderline between the old and the new year we would like to think about work and the rest of our lives. The question is whether all that digging in ourselves does produce something. Friends and colleagues often know us better than we know ourselves.

They are popular in management books and during training: self-testing. For example, in the field of personality and office types. Am I an ideas factory? Or more of an executor? By answering just a few questions you get a picture of yourself that – how surprising – usually fits well with what you have just filled out on the form.

Also popular: rows of questions about what motivates people. For example, first from the viewpoint of the employer (“My people mainly want career opportunities”) and then from the perspective of the employee (“I especially want to do interesting and meaningful work. The contents must appeal to me”).

The premise behind this type of testing is that we know ourselves. We know ourselves better at least than our boss knows us. But in reality, it may as well be the other way.

According to psychologist Timothy Wilson our self-knowledge is limited. We think we have a picture of who we are and what we want, but that image is distorted in many ways.

For example, we automatically suppress all kinds of knowledge, feelings and thoughts about ourselves that are not positive. We do that without knowing that we do it. And we also tend to think only positive things about ourselves: small positive illusions. These two mechanisms are part of what Wilson and colleagues have called our “psychological immune system.” A range of psychological processes that ensures that we keep ourselves in a state of continuous good feelings, even when life sometimes is opposing.

Furthermore, a large part of our daily behavior is not conscientiously established. We are not aware what we do. This behavior is visible to others, but we often have no clear memories of what we do ourselves. Let alone why.

For many people it is an indigestible thought that others know us better than we do. We cherish the idea that we can honestly examine ourselves and judge. But according to psychologists, this is just a pleasant illusion. Our colleagues can see better, than we do, what really makes us run. Our friends hear better than we do, when there is genuine enthusiasm resounding in our stories. Some managers are more likely to know what motivates their employees, than those employees themselves (something which of course, is quite amazing annoying).

If you want to think about yourself and your future in the next few days, then it is worthwhile not to seek the loneliness but rather the crowds. The company of family, friends, colleagues and other people who regularly have the opportunity to observe you in the wild, are preferable. Ask them to share their observations about you with you. What purpose do you think I should go for in the coming year? What would make me happy, do you think? This not only leads to surprising conversations, but perhaps deeper insights than all forms of self-reflection.

Comedienne Bette Midler once said in a movie “Enough about me. Let’s talk about you. What do you think of me?”
Psychologically, that’s not such a stupid statement.

Wie ben ik en wat wil ik? Vraag het een ander
Ben Tiggelaar

Volgens psycholoog Timothy Wilson is onze zelfkennis beperkt.
